Police looking for suspects in ‘targeted’ shooting in North Vancouver

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — RCMP are looking for two suspects in a Christmas shooting in a parking lot on Seylynn Crescent in North Vancouver.

Investigators have identified 25-year-old Rock Habib-Joumaa, who is known to police, as the target of the shooting, though he has no criminal record. They are asking the public for information on two people who were in the area of Mountain Highway and Keith Road at the time of the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 1-877-551-4448, or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca. For anonymous tips, people can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Richard White owns a townhouse in the building and describes the mood inside as frustrating. He says he will bring up his safety concerns with strata management.

“I think everybody is little upset and stressed, and it’s the holiday time when people are always at their highest with stress,” White says. “We’d really like to make sure that this kind of thing does not happen in the future. Things need to be dealt with that we were sure weren’t going to happen”

He says this is not th first time police have been called to this building to deal with a serious incident earlier this year in which people were also injured. White adds that incidents like these happen every day, but it’s alarming that it’s happening in his “backyard.”

“It does not need to be this way in our community,” he quips.

White’s neighbour, Salah Abdelgadir, says residents of the building were notified in a email by strata management of a shooting in the parking lot, saying at the time, they should remain in their units until further notice, with very scarce details.

“It’s a gorgeous building, it is a brand new building, but the opening of it has not been very pleasant,” Abdelgadir says. “I hope it gets better.”

He says otherwise the building is very secure, with locked accesses and radio keys for all entrances. Unless people have explicit access with a key, he says, people cannot enter any floors other than their own. The same goes for the garage.

“I think the problem is once you enter, people enter behind you, and that obviously is a major concern,” he says. “So it has to be controlled.”

He adds he is very surprised because he would not expect a shooting in a new building such as his.
