Vancouver mayor may discuss pipeline with Trudeau at transit meeting

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver mayor Kennedy Stewart says transit improvements will be top of mind when he meets with Justin Trudeau Jan. 28, but he hasn’t forgotten about the multi-billion dollar Trans Mountain project.

Stewart was one of many protesters arrested on Burnaby Mountain last year when he was still the MP for Burnaby South.

His opposition to the expansion of the pipeline hasn’t changed, he says, but Vancouver’s mayor is expecting his next conversation with the prime minister about that controversial topic to be productive.

“I’ve known the Prime Minister for a long time,” Stewart says. “We were in parliament together for seven years. I believe him when he says he really cares about British Columbia. I do know a lot about that file and so I’m hoping that perhaps I can help find some other way forward for the country.”

Stewart says he does not expect the Trudeau to give him any ultimatums.

In August, the Federal Court of Appeal cancelled approval of the pipeline project based on Ottawa’s failure to adequately consult with First Nations or extensively examine how it could hurt marine life.

The National Energy Board is set to submit a new final report to the federal government February 22nd.
