B.C. government has little power for legislature oversight: Premier Horgan

VANCOUVER — British Columbia Premier John Horgan says a recent report alleging spending abuses by the clerk and sergeant-at-arms raises concerns about a broader culture of “entitlement” in the legislature, but there isn’t much he can do as premier.

Speaking to the media in Vancouver, Horgan stressed the Speaker and a management committee are responsible for the legislature, and all the government can do is pass legislation to increase oversight.

Horgan says he raised concerns several years ago about the lack of supervision of clerk Craig James and sergeant-at-arms Gary Lenz.

Both men said in a statement last week that the allegations against them are completely false.

On the issue of Canada’s relationship with China after the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou at Vancouver’s airport last month, Horgan says the association is deteriorating.

He says B.C. does a lot of business with China, and although there’s uncertainty at the moment he’s confident the two jurisdictions will move past it because of their long-standing relationship.
