Deadly police-involved shooting in New Westminster

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – A man has died in a confrontation with police in New Westminster.
Officers were called out to the rear of Walmart at Queensborough Landing on Boyd Street around 9:30 p.m. Sunday after reports of a distraught, suicidal man who may have had a weapon.
“When officers arrived, shots were fired,” said Sgt. Jeff Scott.
The man died of his injuries. No one else was hurt.
The incident unfolded during the store’s opening hours.
“Our major crime unit, along with our forensic identification section were called in to assist. We also notified the Independent Investigations Office, who are now running a concurrent investigation,” Scott said.
The IIO and Coroner’s Service are working to confirm the cause of death.
