Surrey councillor says he won’t back down, despite backlash from mayor

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Don’t vote on party lines, especially when it comes to the police transition.

That’s the message from a Surrey city councillor, who says he’s not backing down despite being called out by Mayor Doug McCallum.

Safe Surrey Councillor Jack Hundial says with the lack of public input and cost, he couldn’t quietly support the police transition just to follow party lines.

He’s been called a hypocrite by the mayor for supporting public consultation on the plan.

Surrey’s mayor is supporting the possible move away from the RCMP and towards a police force of its own.

“Here’s the reality of it, it’s not a one person system, nor is it a one party system, because that’s not what this democracy is about,” Hundial says. “It’s about people stepping up and saying and trying to do the right things and what they believe.”

Last week a number of councillors voiced concerns with the lack of consultation, as the city prepares to send a report on the transition to the province.

That was met with anger from Mayor Doug McCallum, who said Hundial was breaking voters trust.

But Hundial says he wont back down.

“The philosophy that I live by and was echoed recently by one of my idols, Michelle Obama, is ‘They go low, we go high.'”
