VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you’re from the North Shore, you may remember it as Empire Theatres.
After 30 years in North Vancouver, the cinemas on Esplanade close tonight.
Scott Simpson, who lives in North Vancouver, remembers going there back in the 1990s.
“You go in there and each theatre has a different colour and a different name,” he says. “There’s the Rialto, the Majestic, that sort of thing.”
He’s sad about the closure. “It sucks, it’s the end of an era, really.”
Sarah Van Lange with Cineplex says they’re closing this location in Lower Lonsdale because people prefer something new.
“I guess we’re gravitating towards the auditoriums with the bigger screens, and with enhanced movie going experiences like D-BOX motion seats,” she says. “When people are going to the movies now, they want an experience that they can’t replicate at home.”
As these cinemas go dark, a new VIP theatre is opening in West Vancouver at Park Royal.
Tonight’s final showings at the Esplanade Cineplex include “Dumbo,” “How To Train Your Dragon,” and “Captain Marvel.”
