Mayor needs to apologize over ‘grossly inappropriate’ comments on homeless: city councillor

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS 1130) — The Mayor needs to be better than that, and he needs to apologize.
That’s coming from a councilor in Maple Ridge, upset with comments Mike Morden made about the area’s homeless population, including they were ‘raping and pillaging’ the community.
But Coun. Kiersten Duncan says, the mayor should be better than that.
“I feel his comments are grossly inappropriate,” she says. “It’s really disappointing to hear that come from a mayor.”
She says these comments don’t reflect what Maple Ridge is all about.
“It really overshadows the love and compassion we have in our community,” she says. “We have so many people that are working so hard to help those in need, the vulnerable people.”

She says the Mayor needs to do the right thing and apologize, with no excuses.
“The only comments I’ve seen him make are that he is trying to express frustration in the community, which is not appropriate,” she says. “That’s an excuse that’s not an apology.”

Tensions over the homeless situation have been rising recently, with many citizens in the area claiming to be victims of theft.
The province has approved temporary modular housing on land it owns, but that’s drawn the ire of the Mayor.
