Canadians may not be as polite as they used to be: new poll finds level of crudeness increasing

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Most Canadians think people who live in this country have become cruder over the past few years, according to a recent poll.

The new online survey from Research Co. finds 52 per cent of people think we’ve become “less polite” than we were five years ago.

“Almost half of Canadians aged 18-to-34 (46%) say they experience impoliteness on social media a few times a week,” Mario Canseco, president of Research Co. says. “Only 12% of Canada’s Millennials say they only face rudeness on social media less often than a few times a year.”

More than four in five Canadians think parents failing to teach their kids proper behavior are “definitely” or “probably” to blame.

The finger is also being pointed at television shows, social media, and “politicians engaging in personal attacks.”

Only about 33 per cent of those polled say the level of civility among Canucks is the same as it was in 2014, with a low eight per cent of respondents saying they think Canadians are more polite since that time.

Canadians say they also experience rude or impolite behaviour while driving or riding in a car, shopping, at work, walking on the street or using public transit.
