ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – If you’re going to the tulip festival in Abbotsford, don’t forget you’re not allowed to step on the flowers. There’s been no shortage of selfie-seekers since the event opened earlier this month.
“I would say that’s probably the main reason why people come,” said Ashleigh Watters with Abbotsford Tulip Festival.
“They’re crouching down, making it look like they’re surrounded by those flowers as much as possible,” she added, reminding everyone there are rules.
“We are growing for bulb production. Stepping on the tulips kind of ruins the bulbs,” she said. But people are still stepping over the white rope to get the perfect picture.
“It is pretty often that staff are saying stuff to people — whether it is picking the flowers or walking behind the rope.”
If you can’t help yourself, there’s a certain field for that. “A perfect place to go to take those photos — where you’re surrounded by tulips is in the U-pick area, where you can walk amongst all the rows.”
She says the field is about an acre in size, which is plenty of space for the perfect shot.
Thankfully, it appears some of us are getting the message. “It seems this year, a lot more people are following the rules than what we’ve had in the past — whether our fences are in better positions or they’ve taken a look at the code of conduct before walking in.”
