LOWER MAINLAND ( NEWS 1130) — Thursday was one for the temperature-record books in B.C — it was the hottest May 9th for 15 communities in the province.

Some of those communities were in the Lower Mainland, according to Alyssa Charbonneau of Environment Canada.
“Chilliwack and Abbotsford both broke records,” she says. “Near the water, where we had a bit more of the sea breeze, temperatures were lower and we did not see records broken, but it was still well above normal.”
Chilliwack got up to 27.7 degrees Celsius, and Abbotsford got up to 27.1 degrees.
A heat record was also broken in Squamish.
“Almost 30 degrees, only at May 9th, so definitely that was one of the records that was several degrees above the old record, which was set back in 1968,” she says.

Blustery places like Tofino and Bella Coola smashed previous records as well. Tofino hit 25.5 degrees, also three degrees higher than the previous record set, also in 1968. In Bella Coola, it got as high as 27.7 degrees.
Lytton was the hottest spot in the province, at 30 degrees Thursday, but that was not a record.
