Vancouver group that tries to stop sexual assault suspends operations due to lack of funds

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A volunteer group that tries to stop sexual harassment and sexual assaults in Vancouver is suspending operations this month because of a lack of funds.

Stacey Forrester, one of the co-ordinators of Good Night Out Vancouver says they need about $20,000 to get running again.

With nightclubs and pubs getting busier this time of year, Forrester says it’s not a good time to have to hit the pause button.

“I kind of peaked into the stats from this time last year. Stats around May and June were both sitting at connecting with about 150 people each month and then as soon as July came, it spiked up to almost 350,” she says.

Forrester says they get money from the city and the Downtown Business Improvement Association but they’re still seeing a shortfall, which they’re hoping to make up through a Go Fund Me page.

She adds their programming is vital for many people.

“We do a bunch of programming around safer night life and safer arts and culture in the city so this involves workshops or restaurants, music festivals, music venue, etc.”

The group hopes to raise the $20,000 in the coming weeks and be back to normal in June.
