Poll: most people in B.C. support slower speed limits on residential streets

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — When it comes to speed limits, the majority of British Columbians would like to see 30km/hour on all residential streets.
That’s according to a new poll by Research Co, with 58% of people saying they want the reduced limit on streets across BC, while keeping arterial and collector roads at 50km/hour.
In Vancouver, City Council’s move to reduce speed limits to 30km/hour is seen as a very good idea by a majority of those surveyed.
“While many British Columbians are in favour of the City of Vancouver’s pilot project, there are some differences related to political allegiance,” says Mario Canseco, President of Research Co. “British Columbians who voted for the BC New Democratic Party (NDP) and the BC Green Party in the last provincial election are more supportive of the project (74% and 72% respectively) than those who voted for the BC Liberals in 2017 (60%).”
More than two-in-five British Columbians say they see speeding cars on their own streets at lease once a day.
Those living in the Fraser Valley and Northern BC are also more likely to see speeding drivers on their street compared to those in Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver.
