VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A cluster of earthquakes hit the coast of BC this morning.
Earthquakes Canada’s automatic detection system is reporting three within the span of just over 10 minutes.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the first, off Bella Bella shortly before 6 am, had a magnitude of 5.6.
The second, minutes later west of Port Hardy measured 4.9, while the third west of Haida Gwaii, measured 4.7, according to Earthquakes Canada.
The U.S. Geological Survey website shows all three occurred at a depth of between five and 12 kilometres and were centred near the northern tip of the Juan de Fuca plate, one of three plates of the earth’s crust that meet off the BC coast.
The quakes follow a magnitude 5.8 that struck north of Vancouver Island two days ago and another, larger tremblor in Southern California just yesterday.
Emergency Management BC says there’s no threat of a tsunami from any of these earthquakes
