NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A young woman who injured her ankle cliff-jumping was rescued after rangers spotted her clinging to a ladder near the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge Sunday.
“It’s a very dangerous thing that people are doing. We were very lucky, this young lady was very lucky,” says Chief Kit Little of the District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service.
Little estimates the height of the cliff that the woman jumped from at 35 feet. He says in the area where the rescue took place cliffs are as high as 120 feet.
He has been with the department for 24 years and says he’s noticed a significant increase in cliff-jumping, often with devastating results.
“Cliff jumping is not something to try. We’ve got many, many cases of people that are badly hurt or killed,” he says. “People are now trying to do thrilling things and word has gotten out about cliff jumping in Lynn Canyon and unfortunately people don’t realize how dangerous it is”
Little says Sunday’s technical rescue near 90-foot pool required two separate crews but it was swift and smooth.
“She stayed in place, she held on to the ladder that we installed,” Little says.
A crew member was lowered down by rope and the woman was strapped into a safety harness and lifted back to shore.
