Homeless people struggling to stay cool as temperatures rise

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — While some are enjoying the heat, homeless people are trying to figure out how to keep cool.

Covenant House’s Kristy Hayter says the young homeless population is no exception, and with temperatures continuing to climb on the South Coast, the non-profit has been busy trying to help them beat the heat.

“You’re often outside with nowhere to get cool, and often getting access to clean, fresh water is also an issue,” she says.

“Anytime there’s an extreme temperature, young people are seeking extra help. In the summer, it’s no different than in the winter. They’re needing water, sunscreen, cool clothes, and just also a safe place to get out of the sun.”

Hayter says their street team has been handing out things like reusable water bottles, sun screen, flip flops and cooler clothing, but they also need help from the community to watch for those who might be struggling in the warmth.

“I always encourage people to check on everybody, so that everybody is being safe. So if you see somebody, and they look like they’re in distress, you should definitely make sure they’re okay and just ask if they’re okay.”

With summer being just as busy as winter, Hayter says Covenant House always appreciates receiving monetary donations.
