SURREY (NEWS 1130) — The man murdered in a brazen early morning shooting in Surrey Friday was a known member of an “organized crime group,” according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.
The victim was 43-year-old Suminder Grewal of Surrey.
“I can tell you that our victim of homicide, Mr. Grewal, was a well-established member of an organized crime group and we believe his homicide was targeted. We will be engaging with numerous gang enforcement units throughout the Lower Mainland region and they will be working to mitigate any ongoing violence,” says Sergeant Frank Jang.
IHIT is not naming the group with which Grewal is affiliated.
Jang says it’s too early to say whether the two men arrested were gang-affiliated, but it’s a distinct possibility. “Given his links to organized crime, we suspect that may have played a part in it,” Jang says.

Police responded to calls of shots fired at the Southpoint Exchange Mall at 9:20 a.m. on Friday. Two men who fled the scene were arrested shortly afterward. Nathan James De Jong and Calvin Junior Powery-Hooker have both been charged with murder in the case, according to court documents filed on Saturday.
“Despite the arrests made in relation to today’s shooting, there is much more work ahead for our detectives and partners this weekend,” Jang says. “We need to speak with everyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting and we need Mr. Grewal’s close friends and associates to come forward and help us solve his murder.”
IHIT is urging anyone who was at the plaza when the shooting occurred to come forward.
“We need to speak with everyone who was there at the scene,” Jang says. “It was a public area. People were just coming in to grab their morning coffee, going about their business, and this happened. We understand it’s very concerning for the community and we are very fortunate that no one else was hurt.”
“It is very likely that there are people who could add to the mountain of information that we’ve collected so far. This is a plea to everyone who was there,” he says. “Please call us.”
IHIT is canvassing businesses for surveillance footage and wants anyone with dashcam footage to contact them.
