VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A well-known and popular bird that lives in East Vancouver has been missing since last Friday, according to his human friend Shawn Bergman, who has posted an emotional video to Facebook.
The bird, which lacks a fear of people, became a father earlier this year and Bergman says Canuck’s mate is “distraught.”
Bergman says Canuck was last spotted around 3 p.m. but no one has seen the bird since.
“I am extremely worried about him. This is not like him. He hasn’t gone off on any multiple day adventures for over two years so I’m having a really, really hard time just believing that he’s just out there being a crow. He tends to stick to the area, so I’m pretty worried about him and I’m just hoping if anyone sees him to please let me know. If you see him anywhere just let m know.”
If you do spot Canuck, Bergman is hoping you can take a picture or message him on social media.
“If you live in the neighbourhood, check your backyards. I don’t know what else to say. I want my buddy to come home and if there’s anybody out there who has taken him, please let him go. It’s not about me, it’s about him.”
Canuck’s mate “Cassiar” is not handling this well, according to Bergman.
“She keeps sitting on the power lines in the back alley and going out to the trees on the front street and she keeps calling to him and not getting any result. And I keep whistling and I keep getting no result. I’ve been to the [Still Creek] Rookery to try and find him and I’ve got nothing.”
Unable to hold back tears, Bergman is making a direct plea for any information to help track down the crow. “I would be greatly appreciative and so would a lot of other people because we miss him. He’s family. I just want him to come home. Please keep an eye out for him.”
Canuck got international attention in 2017 when he was seen stealing a knife from a crime scene after police had shot a man near Hastings and Cassiar Streets.
The VPD was called after a car was engulfed in flames and when officers got to the scene they were confronted by a man with a knife. Some shots were fired and the man was taken into custody.
