‘All the earmarks of a targeted hit’: Victim of brazen Surrey shooting was known to police

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — Witnesses to a brazen shooting in a busy area of Clayton Heights Saturday say a masked man fired between five to eight shots into a black Mercedes, killing the person in the car.

RCMP have confirmed that when they arrived Saturday afternoon, one man was found to have suffered a gun shot wound and died on the scene.

Following the shooting on Saturday Cpl. Elenore Sturko with Surrey RCMP said “despite all efforts by the first responders and paramedics that man succumbed to his injuries.”

“Our victim was known to police. This has all the earmarks of a targeted hit,” Sargeant Frank Jang with IHIT said Sunday morning “It’s the job of our investagtors and our partners to determine exactly what happened, to get to the bottom of this, who’s responsible, and again we’re appealing to the community to please help us.”

Jang is asking anyone who was in the area around the time of the shooting to contact investigators.

Responders have identified the victim but their identity is not ready to be released.

“It’s always concerning when we have individuals, criminals, who are firing firearms in our community regardless of the area,” Sturko says. “Anytime we have situations like this where there reasonably could be expected to be people around it does pose a risk to the public.”

NEWS 1130’s Bruce Claggett was on scene at the corner of 188th Street and Fraser Highway, a busy area on account of the gas station and grocery store located there.

“It’s very disturbing because it’s broad daylight,” he explains.

The Serious Crime Unit is on scene and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been notified.

The area remained taped off for the investigation as of 9 p.m. Saturday.

IHIT, Surrey RCMP, and B.C.’s Coroners Service are continuing to investigate.

Mounties say they received multiple 911 calls and are asking anyone with information to contact IHIT at 1-877-551-4448 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
