Large fire at home near Anmore Elementary School

ANMORE (NEWS 1130) – A large fire has destroyed a home on Elementary Road in Anmore, with the owners out of town.

The fire, which happened near Anmore Elementary School, started at around 4:30 a.m. and continued well into the morning. Neighbours say flames were seen shooting ten feet into the sky, with heavy smoke pouring out of the building.

Nearly the entire Sasamat Fire Department, including 25 firefighters and two trucks, arrived to find flames already consuming the garage and moving to the second floor. It was under control about three hours later, but no corner of the house was left unscathed.

Officials have not reported anyone hurt, and the home was vacant at the time of the fire. Neighbours tell NEWS 1130 the elderly couple that lives in the home is vacationing in California.

Fire Chief Jay Sharpe lives not far away, and knows the homeowners.

“They’re long term residents, a really nice couple. They’re currently out of the country,” he says, adding they are understandably in shock.

It’s not yet clear what caused the fire. The school was closed while firefighters worked, with staff directing parents to the website for details.
