What makes the perfect public bathroom? JACK 96.9 Vancouver wants to find out

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Is it cleanliness? A fully stocked TP dispenser? A lack of pornographic graffiti?

While a sanitary experience is always preferable, a truly special public washroom offers just a little bit more, and that’s what host Ryan “Sully” Sullivan is looking for as JACK 96.9 tries to find Vancouver’s Best Patron Washroom.

“A lot of people will go use a public restroom, expecting they will find a nice establishment and they leave very disappointed,” Sully tells NEWS 1130. “I want to find the ones with lasting appeal, the presentation that will keep you coming back for more. So we tracked down eight of the finest facilities in the city.”

In the coming weeks, JACK 96.9 will highlight videos of those eight oases, asking people to vote on their favourites before narrowing down the finalists and eventual winner.

But what is the holy grail of public bathrooms?

“I talked to a lot of people about this, I did my homework,” says Sullivan. “A lot of people say they like cleanliness or toilet paper but that’s elementary, that’s primary school. We’re talking about real stuff here — seat slope, bowl height, stall door length. These are things maybe you don’t really think about but they really work into that lasting appeal of a good bathroom.”

Not that it was easy to weed through some of the top lavatories in the land.

“There are some tremendous ones out there. I will give some honourable mentions. If you go down to the Renaissance Hotel, it’s a nice heated floor in there and that’s hard to find, but we tracked down some of the best bathrooms in bars, pubs, and we have a wildcard entry in a gas station in Whistler. I combed the earth for these places and I’m pretty proud of the list we have,” he explains.

“I’ve been working on this since early August and we’ve compiled a tremendous list. The videos speak for themselves so just get onto JACK’s social media, vote for them and may the best facility win,” he says, adding that it has been a labour of love.

“Lots of time sitting on bowls around the city. It’s a lot of homework that had to be done for the people!”

JACK 96.9 and NEWS 1130 are both owned by Rogers Media.
