OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – If you, a friend or family member has used a soft-shelled hyperbaric chamber advertised online as treatment for conditions including migraines, autism and cerebral palsy – stop right away.
Health Canada is out with that warning, saying oxygen therapy using hard-shelled chambers is a well-established treatment, but no soft-shelled chambers have been licensed.
The agency adds it has not been given any evidence showing the soft-shelled chambers are beneficial, and says potential risks include: fire or explosion because of a build up of static discharge in the chamber; changes to blood sugar levels; damage to the ears, eyes, sinuses, lungs, and teeth; and disease spread through cross-contamination.
Using the devices in combination with oxygen concentration devices seriously ups the risk of a fire.
