Fireworks in North Delta lead to fireworks online

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – Fireworks in the sky over Delta on Sunday meant fireworks on Facebook Monday morning. Community members have gone online to express their feelings about the sounds of explosions at around 10 p.m. on Oct. 27.

One member of North Delta Community Corner, a Facebook group, posted:

“Enough! I get up at 4:45 a.m. to go to work, my dog is freaking out, and it’s constant frigging banging. Can we not stop at 9 p.m. to be fair to your neighbours?”

That post prompted more than 250 comments, with some defending those setting off the explosions in what was believed to be part of a Diwali or Halloween celebration, and others upset about the noise.

“Normally I don’t mind the fireworks but tonight it sounds like a scene out of a war movie,” another group member commented.

“It’s a once a year celebration, grab some ear plugs,” another responded.

Those who didn’t seem to mind the noise pointed out by-laws permit noise up to 11 p.m., but that you do need a permit for fireworks in the City of Delta.

Cris Leykauf with Delta Police says posters weren’t imagining it – Sunday was a busy night.

“We had a significant number of complaints throughout the evening both of parties and of fireworks being set off at various locations, particularly in North Delta,” she says, adding police did receive complaints but the fireworks were often over by the time officers arrived at the reported locations.

“There were a number of people in North Delta that were not aware of the Diwali celebrations, so once that was explained to people they did understand it was a one night type of event.”

But Leykauf says one person was selling fireworks out of their garage.

“That was causing a bit of a traffic issue on one street in North Delta so that was shut down.”

Meanwhile, in Vancouver, City Hall is continuing its debate over whether consumer fireworks should be entirely banned in the city.
