Possible Canuck the crow sightings in Yaletown

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A glimmer of hope for fans of the missing notorious and beloved ‘Canuck’ the crow: he may have been spotted in Yaletown.

Shawn Bergman, Canuck’s human friend who runs the Facebook page Canuck and I, got a tip over the weekend about a somewhat-friendly crow jumping onto tables and drinking water out of coffee cups at the Starbucks near Robson and Beatty Streets. That email was buried in his spam folder, and Bergman missed his chance to investigate. Canuck hasn’t been seen since the end of August, but he’s still holding on to hope he will turn up.

The crow spotted and photographed over the weekend didn’t have any markers – Canuck has tags on his legs to show he’s had contact with humans. Even so, Bergman says it looks just like him.

“The not-scared-of people detail, but it was also just the photos. I’ve seen lots of photos of people who have come across other crows and thinking that might be Canuck, but it’s instantly debunked as soon as I see the photo – I can tell right away if it’s him or not,” he says.

“These photos look very much like him. I’ve very much leaning at they look 98 per cent like him. This has been a really, really credible tip, and I’m just wanting to make sure to look into it to see if maybe it’s him.”

Canuck is generally bigger than most crows, he says, but it’s his friendliness toward humans that sets him apart.

“He’s generally bigger than most crows, but as well, I would say his overall demeanor towards humans, there’s not a lot of crows that will saddle up next to a human,” he says.

A second tip came in Monday night about a friendly crow in the same area, so he set out Tuesday hoping he might be able to find him.

“Just walking around the streets and hoping that he recognizes me, or if I come across him that would be great, or at least be able to figure out if this is or is not Canuck. So I got to take every tip as it comes and look into it,” he says.

“It’s been a day of searching, so when you don’t have success, just being out here a couple hours […] it does discourage you a little bit, but I’ll be back here tomorrow if I can’t locate this crow tonight.”

The popular crow has been presumed dead, but Bergman says until his body is found, he isn’t giving up hope.

He thinks this crow could be his feathered friend, believing someone may have kidnapped the Vancouver icon and removed the bands.

Bergman asks anyone who may know where he is, or think they spot him, to take a photo and send it to canuckandi@gmail.com
