Intersection cameras catch thousands of B.C. speeders

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) — Since the first five “intersection safety cameras” were set up in July they’ve caught over 2,300 B.C. drivers speeding.
The cameras clock and ticket drivers entering an intersection at well over the posted speed limit on a red, yellow or green light.
Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth says one driver was captured on camera going 174 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
“That illustrates the need for the cameras,” he says. “There’s some pretty stupid people out there.”

He says the cameras are here to stay.
“We have to drive home that message to people, that speeding–it kills people, it injures people, it causes significant damage.”
By spring 35 cameras that catch speeders racing through intersections will be up and running.
Seven of the 35 intersections are in Surrey and 12 are in Vancouver, followed by three in Burnaby.
The province decided on the intersections that would receive the new cameras in May, after looking over speed and crash data at 140 intersections that already have red-light cameras.
