Langley Township project with 500 rental units ‘much needed, long overdue’: councillor

LANGLEY TOWNSHIP (NEWS 1130) – Hundreds of new rental units could soon be coming to Langley Township.

A proposal for 472 apartments in the Carvolth neighbourhood has been sent to public hearing. It includes five six-storey buildings – one with mixed-use space – at 86th Avenue, all right near the Carvolth park and ride bus exchange.

Coun. Kim Richter says she’s happy to see something with so many rental units.

“Much needed, and much overdue,” she says. “We need more of it, particularly in the Township, because we’re the fastest-growing part of Langley.”

She says rental housing is especially needed for younger generations.

“Millenials, in particular, I’m thinking about, because they often can’t get into the housing market. They need to be able to get into the rental market, and this is a good way for them to stay in the community and continue to contribute to Langley as it grows,” she says.

“I don’t think we have enough rental options, and seeing this type of facility […] gives options that are needed, instead of basement suites, which is what we have a lot of right now.”

The location, too, she says is appealing.

“If we can put people close to transit so they can commute to wherever it is that they are being employed, that is certainly going to be a very good thing for the environment, and also for people, going forward,” she says.

As to whether there are any assurances by developers that the units will stay rentals, she says council could put a covenant on the project.

Richter says she was happy to vote for the proposal to pass first and second reading, she will keep an open mind as it heads to a public hearing Nov. 18.
