Port Moody jacks up fines for trash by-law infractions

PORT MOODY (NEWS 1130) — Not putting out the garbage properly in Port Moody will now cost residents a whole lot more.
The city is spiking its fines for putting garbage out too early or leaving bins unlocked to make sure bears and humans stay safe.
The change was announced Thursday.
A first offence used to cost $50, that fine has increased tenfold to $500.
“The most effective action our residents can take to prevent conflicts between people and bears is to manage garbage and other attractants properly,” says Acting Mayor Steve Milani. “That’s why the City takes bylaw violations, such as leaving waste carts unlocked on non-collection days or setting carts out for collection too early, very seriously.”
If you’re caught more than twice, every offence will cost you $1,000.
