VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – We’ll find out in June who will replace Andrew Weaver as the leader of the B.C. Green Party, but in the interim, Saanich North and the Island MLA Adam Olsen will take the helm.
“I’ve talked to both of my colleagues about this, and I’m excited to work with them and our caucus to continue to move our party forward to that date when we elect a new leader in June,” Olsen tells NEWS 1130.
He says he already has a good working relationship with NDP Premier John Horgan.
“I was honoured to be a part of his Wild Salmon Advisory Council to raise the issue of wild salmon on the coast of British Columbia and I look forward to, in the new year, continuing to build an even more close relationship with the premier.”
And Olsen says this change won’t impact his party’s current governance partnership with the NDP.
“The Confidence and Supply Agreement between the B.C. NDP and the B.C. Greens, I signed that agreement, my colleague Sonia Furstineau signed that agreement, as did Andrew Weaver. That doesn’t change.”
This comes two months after Weaver, who has led the party since 2015, announced he was stepping down. The former leader said in October he plans to stay on as one of three Green MLAs on Vancouver Island until his successor is named at the annual convention in Nanaimo.
Three debates will be held in the weeks after April 30 and voting, primarily online, starts Jun. 15, ending on Jun. 26. There will be a secure phone option available for party members who have no internet access.
If three or more candidates run, ballots will be ranked.
