VICTORIA – The BC Coroners Service has confirmed a man in his 70 from the Comox Valley was the person killed in a plane crash on Vancouver Island this weekend.
In an email to NEWS 1130, the Coroners Service says investigators are still trying to figure out “how, where, when and by what means he came to his unexpected death.”
The update comes as members of the Transportation Safety Board tried again on Monday to get to the site of the deadly crash in a remote area on the west coast of the Island, near Stewardson Inlet.
The terrain is rugged, making it difficult for investigators to do their job — or even get to where the plane in.
Mounties say investigators found the plane’s wreckage on Sunday after it was reported overdue for its arrival in Courtenay. The plane was scheduled to land at the Courtenay Airpark on Saturday afternoon.
At least one person was killed in the crash, but it’s still unclear if there were others onboard the Cessna 172, which can carry as many as four passengers.
The cause of the crash hasn’t been released.
