VPD Sergeant dismissed for inappropriate relationship with junior officer who took her own life

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The Vancouver Police Department has been ordered to let go of one of its sergeants following an internal investigation and death of one of its own members.
Cst. Nicole Chan took her own life last January following, what is being described as, an inappropriate relationship with Sgt. David Van Patten.
There was an internal investigation into his actions and the actions of another superior officer for several months prior to this decision by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner.
The three allegations of “Discredible Conduct” were confirmed during the investigation.
“The Vancouver Police respect the OPCC process and the final outcome. We continue to grieve the loss of Constable Chan and provide support to our membership as needed. The Vancouver Police will continue to be in touch with Constable Chan’s family,” says Sgt. Aaron Roed.
Police officers have the right for their dismissal to be reviewed by a retired judge through a public hearing. The Police Complaint Commissioners can also order a public hearing.
So far, neither of these requests has been made.
