Delta MLA calls out lengthy timeline for Massey Tunnel replacement

DELTA (NEWS 1130) — A Delta MLA is taking concern over the lengthy timeline for the Massey Tunnel replacement project.

Commuters can see what the province is up to in Delta where images of the new Massey Tunnel will be on display at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

However, Ian Paton, the MLA for Delta South, says he was at Wednesday night’s open house in Richmond, and he’s not impressed with the timeline.

“It’ll be probably three years of environmental assessment reviews, five years of construction. We’d be looking at eight to nine years before this thing would even get built,” he says. “I mean my goodness, I went through this for years on Delta city council, exactly what we saw last night in Richmond.”

The new design has yet to be confirmed.

Payton adds he doesn’t believe the project will go ahead because of concerns such as the health of fish.

“People didn’t worry too much about stuff like that in 1959, but they sure worry about the environmental issue of plunking a concrete tube in the Fraser River in 2020.”

He also calls the time set aside for an environmental review a stall tactic.
