More Canadians flying back from Wuhan, China

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The second plane sent to bring Canadians home from Wuhan, China should reach Ontario Tuesday.

The flight will stop in Vancouver to refuel and make its way to the Canadian Forces Base in Trenton where the 185 passengers will be quarantined for 14 days in light of the novel Coronavirus.

Canada’s chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, said in a statement that none of the 213 evacuees from Wuhan, China — the epicentre of the outbreak — who are quarantined at CFB Trenton have exhibited any symptoms of the virus.

Some of the medical staff on the first flight have already been released from quarantine. Each staff member was assessed by Tam, and she concluded they are not at risk of exposure to the virus.

The risk of the virus spreading remains low.

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne says the government is monitoring the well-being of the Canadians quarantined on the Diamond Princess cruise ship docked in Yokohama, Japan.

An eighth Canadian has been taken from the ship to a local hospital after testing positive for the virus.

The company says in a release issued early Monday morning that the positive test results were confirmed by the Japanese Ministry of Health and that it is following the ministry’s “disembarkation protocols to provide medical care for these new cases.”

This latest case raises to eight the number of Canadians aboard the Diamond Princess who have contracted the new virus.

The other seven were earlier taken to Japanese hospitals for treatment and monitoring.
