Richmond Islamic centre cancels programs due to coronavirus

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130 — The Az-Zahraa Islamic Centre in Richmond has cancelled daily prayers and activities due to COVID-19 concerns.

Its executive committee has decided on the measure, it says, to protect the health and safety of community members.

The centre offers sports and youth programs in addition tor religious services. It also rents out its hall for private events.

“This decision has been made proactively, with the best interest of the community first and foremost in our minds, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, who are the most susceptible to the effects of COVID-19,” says a statement posted to Facebook.

Funerals will proceed but with added caution.

“The Religious Affairs Director and his team will be responsible to take appropriate precautions to limit the exposure and spread of COVID-19 as much as possible, and as necessary, make the decision to suspend or alter services,” the statement continues.

The school associated wit the centre will stay open and pre-booked events will go ahead.
