White Rock Pier barricaded from public in response to COVID-19 outbreak

WHITE ROCK (NEWS 1130) — White Rock’s iconic pier reopened to the public following extensive repairs a few months ago, but the pier is closed once again.

As of Tuesday, the pier will be barricaded from the public, after huge crowds flocked to the pier this past weekend.

Councillor Christopher Trevelyan says the closure had to happen in the interest of public safety.

“Public safety is number one in this COVID-19 crisis that we are dealing with,” he says Monday evening.

“The crowds are well down from what they were like on the weekend, but when good weather comes back, crowds may return, and everyone is encouraged to stay home.”

Trevelyan says people are ignoring advice to distance themselves socially, and that is what has prompted the closure.

He says the move is in the best interest of the public and the closure is for the immediate future.

“With what the world is dealing, with when everyone else is sacrificing so deeply, businesses, restaurants, teachers that are nurses, doctors and the frontline right now battling away, at the very least we can do is help residents and visitors practice social distancing,” he tells NEWS 1130.

The move was made by council in a unanimous vote.

A strong winter storm hammered the pier in 2018 and only reopened in September.
