DELTA (NEWS 1130) — The City of Delta has laid off more than 500 recreation and auxiliary workers due to COVID-19, according to Mayor George Harvie.
Many municipal facilities have been forced to close due to health and safety orders related to the novel coronavirus.
Harvie said the city may have to consider further layoffs in other departments, depending on how long the pandemic lasts.
“It hurts to lay anybody off,” Harvie said. “But this workforce of over 500 people is essential to our services, and they are our backbone, which makes us work.”
He hopes the workers will come back to work for the city when the health crisis abates.
