Search continues for overdue plane believed to have crashed in Fraser River Saturday

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS 1130) — Despite days of searching, there’s still no sign of a missing plane that likely crashed into the Fraser River near Maple Ridge over the weekend.

A witness called police after seeing a small plane flying low over the water and then disappearing on Saturday, and a plane listed as overdue at the Boundary Bay airport on Sunday matches the size and colour of the description.

The plane was believed to be carrying two people.

Constable Julie Klausser is with the Ridge Meadows RCMP, which has taken control of the investigation.

She says sonar detection equipment is being brought in on Tuesday to help with the search.

“Obviously this is all weather dependant”, says Klausser. “So, there’s another company that’s coming in that’s going to be assisting with sonar equipment and just basically navigating the riverbed.”

She says some rough recent weather has made the search difficult.

“Today (Monday), it was pouring really hard, and there’s a really heavy spring run-off, so the water is moving really quickly and there’s poor visibility.”

She’s also thanking witnesses that have come forward thus far, saying it truly demonstrates the importance of speaking up if you see something like this.

“Basically, if they had taken 10 minutes or were delayed in any way, they wouldn’t have seen the plane possibly crash into the Fraser River,” says Klausser. “
