Family in Taiwan fears loved one on board possible plane crash in Fraser Valley

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS 1130) — A family in Taiwan is anxiously waiting for word about a loved one believed to be on a small plane that may have crashed into the Fraser River Saturday.
For eight hours on Monday, Vermon Wang volunteered to search the river from his boat from Vancouver’s Milltown district all the way to Maple Ridge.
“But I can’t find nothing, no oil, no gas,” he says.
Wang explains he doesn’t know the family, but members reached out through social media platform WeChat after seeing he helped recover the body of someone else reported missing a few years ago.
He says the family remains hopeful the missing man is still alive.
Two people were believed to be on the aircraft.
Wang says he was told the other person on board is an instructor.
“One guy’s the teacher. The other guy’s learning. We searched [for them] from the river on both sides.”
Ridge Meadows RCMP say sonar equipment is being used to search for the plane linked to a flight school at the Boundary Bay Airport in Delta.
A witness called police after seeing a small plane flying low over the water and then disappearing on Saturday.
That plane matches the description of an aircraft reported overdue on Sunday.
