Emergency meeting on future of traffic in Stanley Park set for Thursday

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The future of Stanley Park is up for debate Thursday night.

The Vancouver Park Board is holding an emergency meeting to consider permanently reducing vehicle traffic in the city’s “crown jewel.”

Stanley Park has been closed to vehicle traffic in April amid the COVID-19 pandemic to encourage physical distancing measures. There have been calls to make changes in the park permanent, and staff were asked to look at the feasibility of traffic calming measures earlier this month.

Advocates say reducing vehicle traffic makes the park safer and greener, while those against making measures more longterm have concerns about parking and accessibility.

Some suggested permanent changes include reducing Stanley Park Drive to a single lane. In-place closures do not include the causeway.
