‘We don’t need more condos:’ affordable housing activists rally against approved Surrey condo development

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — Activists are rallying in Whalley Saturday afternoon to tell the City of Surrey they don’t need any more condos in the area.
Community members are speaking out against the 1,200 unit luxury development Bosa properties proposal at last month’s Surrey Public Hearing.
The city recently approved the development — and activists say it would sit where Nickerson Place modular housing currently stands.
Demonstrators are speaking out against the recently approved condo proposal, they argue will displace low-income tenants in the area.
“Whalley needs to be a place where low-income people can survive. Where low-income people can live and create community together. So that’s the fight right now,” Isabel Krupp, Red Braid member and organizer, tells NEWS 1130.
Kupp adds this further displaces marginalized people in Whalley.
“The modular housing is slated to come down at the end of the summer. We see this modular housing in Whalley at being at the centre of the storm of gentrification in the area.”
The group will continue fighting the development and Kupp says they will be calling for 100 per cent social housing on the Surrey strip.
“We’ve tried going in front of city council, but we’ve been ignored that means we need to escalate the struggle and do whatever it takes to stop the development.”
