Easing restrictions on travel in B.C. puts Tofino back in tourism spotlight

TOFINO (NEWS 1130) — One of the top spots when it comes to B.C. tourism is seemingly ready to welcome people back as the provincial government continues to move forward with re-opening plans.

Tourism Tofino Executive Director Nancy Cameron says they’ll be doing their best to keep people safe.

“Safety measures, coupled with an extra dose of patience like everywhere else – there will be some waiting in line. That will help everyone have a wonderful experience and Tofino is very well equipped to host people,” Cameron said.

She adds all 82 properties in Tofino are open for business now with plenty of vacancies but with the beaches and natural beauty, there’s lots of open space as well.

“We’re really well suited for this kind of environment that we find ourselves in. Our staff and residents are very concerned about safety and making sure that safety is everyone’s top priority.” Cameron added.

And she says people are starting to come back.

“There has been a slow trickle of visitors coming into Tofino. It’s allowed our businesses to transition and to make sure that their protocols are in place and are working.”

The community that welcomes over a half million people a year had been shut down for three months due to the spread of COVID-19. During that time, there were no confirmed cases in the area.
