21 new COVID-19 cases in B.C., no deaths

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) — Provincial health officials are “concerned” about a recent spike in COVID-19 cases after recording more than 20 for the fifth time in six days.

B.C. announced 21 new cases — including two that were epi-linked — on Wednesday, but no deaths.

“We are concerned about the increase in new cases in recent days as COVID-19 continues to silently circulate in our communities,” says a release from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix.

“While early on, many of our long-term care and assisted living facilities were impacted, most of the new cases are in the broader community.”

COVID-19 cases in B.C. now total 3,149, while deaths remain at 189.

Health officials also reported no new healthcare facility outbreaks. However, active outbreaks remain at two long-term care homes, Holy Family Hospital in Vancouver and Maple Hill in Langley.

 

 

Another community outbreak is active, at the Krazy Cherry Fruit Co. in Oliver, as are several community exposure events, including one in Kelowna.

Of 207 active cases in B.C., 14 people remain in hospital, including five in intensive care.

The recovery rate is 87 per cent.

“Here in British Columbia, as we spend more time with others, we need to find our balance with COVID-19. We need to minimize the number of cases, manage new cases as they emerge and modify our activities accordingly,” health officials say.

“To do this, we all have to do our part by continuing to use our layers of protection and following our rules for safe social interactions.”

Cases by health regions since the start of the pandemic: 1,023 in Vancouver Coastal; 1,659 in Fraser; 135 in Island; 216 in Interior; 65 in Northern Health; and 51 involving people who reside outside of Canada.
