Pair of Burnaby shootings likely ‘related to Lower Mainland gang conflict’: RCMP

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) — Two men suffered serious injuries after a pair of overnight drive-by shootings in Burnaby, but neither one is speaking to police.

According to Burnaby RCMP, witnesses first reported shots being fired from a “white coupe vehicle” around 12:30 a.m. near the intersection of North Road and Cottonwood Avenue.

“A 21-year-old Vancouver man was located suffering from several gun shot wounds. The man was taken to hospital where he was treated for serious injuries,” reads a release.

“At this time, the victim is not cooperating with the police investigation.”

About two hours later, police were called to Smith Road near Canada Way where shots were fired and a “white crossover type vehicle” was fleeing the scene.

“The Burnaby RCMP engaged in a pursuit with the vehicle, accelerating to speeds exceeding 160 km/hr. Fearing for public safety, the pursuit was ended,” the release continues.

“A short time later, a 25-year-old Surrey man arrived at the hospital having suffered from several gunshot wounds. The man was treated for serious injuries and he too is not cooperating with the police investigation.”

It’s been an unsettling morning for people living in two neighbourhoods in Burnaby following two apparent shootings.

Police tape had been seen along Smith Avenue near Canada Way, as well as near North Road and Cottonwood Avenue as Mounties investigate.

It’s not clear if the two incidents are related, but police say they appear “to be related to the Lower Mainland gang conflict.”

Witnesses are being asked to ” come forward and help us end this string of violence.”
