SURREY (NEWS 1130) — Police warn there will be a behind the bench presence in a popular gathering spot for post-Canucks revelry since the 2011 Stanley Cup run.

Heading into Friday night’s game as the Vancouver Canucks look to close out the St. Louis Blues tonight in the Stanley Cup playoffs, Surrey RCMP and Delta Police say they’ll be monitoring the intersection at Scott Road and 72nd Avenue in Newton.

“While we understand people naturally want to celebrate Canucks victories, we encourage them to do so within their own homes, or at small gatherings,” says Cris Leykauf, spokesperson for Delta Police.

Police are asking young partiers to remember there is still a pandemic, while reminding them to maintain physical distance.

“Celebrations during previous play-off runs have been peaceful and, apart from traffic concerns, crowds have not caused significant issues,” says Staff Sgt. Winston Shorey. “This year, however, we are concerned about the risk of COVID-19 transmission among those who attend the gathering. We are asking everyone to ensure that they are complying with COVID-19 public health orders while celebrating.”
