Police urge Canucks fans to celebrate responsibly at Surrey-Delta intersection

DELTA (NEWS 1130) — Celebrate the Vancouver Canucks, but do it safely and in a COVID-19-friendly way, urge police before fans head to the popular spot at Scott Road and 72nd Avenue.
Police say there will be a higher police presence in the area on the border of Delta and Surrey “to ensure the safety of those celebrating, drivers and pedestrians.”

Tuesday night is Game 2 of the Canucks’ best of seven-game run against the Vegas Golden Knights, and a win for Vancouver would tie the series.
Delta police say there has been an increase in the number of fans heading to the intersection.
“While we understand fans wanting to celebrate, we want to ensure that fans are being safe and are following public health orders in regards to COVID-19; maintaining social distance, wearing a mask, and not congregating in groups of more than 50 people. Our advice: please stay home to celebrate, and Go Canucks Go,” says Insp. Ciaran Feenan.

Surrey Coun. Linda Annis is for celebrating the Canucks, but doing so while staying a safe distance apart.
“We need to be celebrating sensibly, and we need to remember the pandemic is still here.”
A similar reminder from police came from Surrey and Delta officers ahead of the Canucks’ win against the St. Louis Blues on Friday.
Mounties in Surrey ended up handing out seven tickets for seatbelt violations as more than 1,000 people flocked to the intersection after the game.

Last week, B.C. announced fines for people who break COVID-19 safety regulations.
