Downed power lines in Maple Ridge trap people in car, close Lougheed Highway

By

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS 1130) — The eastbound lanes of Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge have reopened after strong winds toppled a tree, bringing power lines down onto a car Monday afternoon.

The incident forced the closure of the major route between 240th and 272nd streets at 2 p.m. for several hours. The westbound lanes remain closed.

Mora Scott with BC Hydro says crews responded, making it possible for the people in the car to get out safely.

“Our crews have made the situation in the area safe but we’re waiting right now for a secondary crew to come in and make a repair so we can get everybody’s power restored,” she said Monday.

Maple Ridge Fire & Rescue has confirmed the people in the vehicle were not injured.
