Vancouver’s Holy Family long-term care facility reports COVID-19 case

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There’s been a new COVID-19 diagnosis at the Holy Family long-term care facility in Vancouver.

A staff member at care centre on Argyle Street near Southeast Marine Drive — which recorded the second highest total of deaths in B.C. from COVID-19 — has tested positive for the coronavirus, though public health says the exposure risk to residents and other staff is low.

“However, out of an abundance of caution, enhanced surveillance and infection control measures have been implemented and an outbreak of COVID-19 has been formally declared,” a letter from Vancouver Coastal Health Medical Health Officer Dr. Mark Lysysyn reads.

As a result of the positive case, a section of the care facility has also been locked down until at least Saturday as a precaution.

“Until then, infection control measures may result in some residents being asked to remain in their rooms, including during mealtimes. You may also notice restrictions to group activities and non-essential services,” Lysysyn writes.

He notes these precautions are “standard approaches” in care facilities through seasonal influenza outbreaks.

Any resident or staff member who starts to show symptoms will be tested.

There was a COVID-19 outbreak declared for the entire Holy Family Hospital campus in early June, with dozens of staff and residents diagnosed and 21 deaths reported.

Restrictions had only been lifted on Aug. 30.
