Man charged with murder in 2017 death of Nanaimo teen

NANAIMO (NEWS 1130) — A little more than three years after 16-year-old Makayla Chang went missing, there have been charges laid in connection with her death.

Mounties in Nanaimo say Steven Bacon is accused of first-degree murder after the teen, who lived and attended school in the city, went missing in May 2017.

Chang’s body was found two months later.

Bacon was arrested last September in Fredericton, N.B. on unrelated charges after Mounties asked for the public’s help to find him a month before.

“Makayla’s family, and the community of Nanaimo and of Vancouver Island as a whole have been greatly affected by the loss of this young life. Hopefully, this charge can assist with providing answers and bringing a degree of resolution to Makayla’s family,” said Const. Gary O’Brien.

A date hasn’t been set for Bacon’s first appearance.
