CHILLIWACK (NEWS 1130) — Two teens are dead and one man is seriously injured after the car they were in plunged off the road, flipped and landed in the Fraser River late Saturday night.
The crash happened just before midnight near Ballam and McDonald roads.
When first responders arrived at the scene they found three young occupants trapped inside the vehicle.
“Emergency responders arrived and located the vehicle down an embankment in the Fraser River approximately 10 feet from the dyke and immediately began rescue efforts,” a release from the Chilliwack RCMP reads.
Emergency responders were able to extract all three people from the vehicle but despite CPR and life-saving efforts, two girls aged 17-year-old and 18-year-old died.
A 21-year-old man was airlifted to hospital in critical condition.
“Fatal collisions are always tragic, but ones involving young people are particularly difficult,” the RCMP’s Sgt. Krista Vrolyk said in a release.
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of all those involved in last night’s crash.”
The collision is still under investigation by the Chilliwack RCMP, the Lower Mainland District -Integrated Collision Analyst Reconstructionist Service (ICARS) and BC Coroners Service.
While there is no additional information about the teens involved the police are working on determining if speed or alcohol played a role in the crash.
