Thousands remain without electricity as power restored to most customers on South Coast

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Thousands of homes and businesses still don’t have power, more than 12 hours after a wicked wind storm roared through the South Coast Tuesday.
The outages stretch from Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast, to Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.
According to BC Hydro, power has been turned back on for 96 per cent of customers impacted by the storm.
“BC Hydro crews made good progress yesterday and overnight, and have restored power to more than 192,000 customers since the windstorm began early Tuesday morning,” BC Hydro says in an update sent Wednesday morning.
However, close to 7,700 customers remain without electricity. Chilliwack is among the hardest hit communities, along with Duncan.
Close to half of the more than 192,000 outages were on the Lower Mainland, with the largest reported in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, Langley, Surrey, White Rock, and Maple Ridge.
Large branches snapping and falling on power lines was mostly to blame.
The high winds were also to blame for some BC Ferries cancellations.
