Vancouver council approves free parking for veterans despite staff advice

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Vancouver city council has greenlit a move to let veterans park for free starting next month.
The move comes after staff issued a controversial report advising against the move to launch a year-long pilot project allowing former service members to park at metered spots in the city without paying.
In a unanimous vote, councillors went against the advice of staff and voted to move forward with the plan, which will come into effect Nov. 3.

Several councillors took to Twitter after the vote to applaud the decision, and express gratitude to the veterans who spoke to council in support of the project.
Canad’s Minister of National Defence took to Twitter to support the project saying council made the “right decision.”
“Vancouver residents know Veterans have stood up for Canada and this thoughtful gesture means a lot.”
