Five COVID-19 outbreaks in Lower Mainland as province reports 223 new cases

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Five COVID-19 outbreaks have been reported in the Lower Mainland as B.C. announced 223 new cases Friday.

Two community outbreaks were confirmed at Langley’s Coast Spas Manufacturing and Pace Processing in Surrey by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, in a release with Stephen Brown, deputy minister of health.

Fraser Health declared outbreaks at Al Hogg Pavilion in White Rock, Laurel Place in Surrey and Burnaby Lodge after individual staff members tested positive for the virus at all three sites.

There are 17 long-term care or assisted-living facilities and two acute-care facilities with active outbreaks.

Outbreaks are over at PICS Assisted Living, Good Samaritan Delta View Care Centre, Chartwell Carrington House Retirement Residence, and Thornebridge Gardens Retirement Residence.

“In recent days, we have seen a number of new outbreaks of COVID-19 in the community and in long-term care facilities,” Henry and Brown said. “Contact-tracing teams throughout our province are working around the clock to stop further spread, but it requires all of us to do our part to be successful in these efforts.”

For three days in a row this week, the province has seen more than 200 infections in its daily update. A new record was set Thursday when 274 infections were reported along with a stern message from Henry that more restrictions will be put in to curb transmission of the virus, if necessary.

Henry has urged British Columbians to keep their social circles small, with no more than six people at gatherings.

“This is our opportunity and the time to take a step back from our social interactions and keep our groups small this weekend. In doing this, we show our appreciation and support for the important work of contact tracers,” she said.

The number of people under public health monitoring after coming into close contact with an infected person continues to rise. There are now 4,637 people in isolation and 2,009 active cases.

No one else has died from the COVID-19, leaving the total at 256.

Since the start of the pandemic, 12,554 cases have been confirmed. Of those, 10,247 people have recovered.

Seventy-five patients are in hospital, with 24 of them in intensive care.
